Medicare can feel confusing, but it doesn't have to be. Here's a simple breakdown of the four parts — A, B, C, and D — and how they work together.

Medicare

  • Already on Social Security/RRB?

    • Parts A & B may start automatically.

  • Not taking Social Security yet?

    • Enroll through Social Security during your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) around your 65th birthday.

  •  Still working with employer coverage?

    • You may delay Part B if it’s creditable—confirm with HR/insurer to avoid penalties.

  • Missed your IEP?

    • Use the General Enrollment Period (Jan 1–Mar 31);

    • Coverage usually begins the 1st of the month after you enroll.

  • Under 65 with a disability?

    • Different timelines apply (SSDI, ALS, ESRD).

  • Medicare Advantage/Part D:Compare during IEP;

    • MA Open Enrollment (Jan 1–Mar 31)  lets MA members make one change.
